OATI: Engine for the Future—ELECTRICITY ‘SMART’ GRID

Imagine this thought experiment—If Alexander Graham Bell were somehow transported to the twenty-first century, he would not begin to recognize the components of modern telephony–smart phones, video calling, and cell towers – while Thomas Edison, one of the U.S. electricity grid’s key early architects, would be familiar with its framework. Technology moves in one direction only—forward! Industry observers believe the power grid systems across countries are long due in that direction. Smart Grid is the engine for the future, one that will drive electricity systems throughout the world onward. Energy and utility companies face challenges from aging infrastructures, disruptive technologies, environmental concerns, and new regulations. The energy and utility industry’s move to smart grid technologies is driving a more integrated and complex approach to the generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption of energy. Responding to these changes means companies must trans-form their business, both in operations technology and information technology. “We, at OATI, are honored to have created one of the best Smart Grid and Smart Instruments in the country,” prides Sasan Mokhtari, President and CEO, Open Access Technology International, Inc (OATI).

OATI provides innovative software solutions that simplifies, streamlines, and empowers the operational tasks required in today’s energy commerce and Smart Grid. The leading energy software solutions provider deploys large, complicated, and diverse mission-critical applications committed to industry standards.

“OATI's dedicated staff works with single-minded focus to meet our customers’ changing commercial and technical needs. Our client’s respective OATI solutions are hosted and maintained on a reliable Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform,” asserts Mokhtari. The integrated hardware and software solution, OATI GridControl, merges hardware, software, and infrastructure for end-to-end optimization of power systems from demand-side to renewable generation, bulk power generation, and energy markets.

OATI GridControl provides end-to-end security, utilizes real-time measurements, and enables balancing variable generation with demand-side resources. “GridControl is providing operators improved visibility to operating conditions and fully securing the power grid of the future,” points Mokhtari, adding “Playing an equally important role in the Smart Grid technology is our pioneering suite of software solutions—OATI webSmartEnergy.”

OATI webSmartEnergy connects customers, resources, grid operations, and energy markets intelligently—creating a greener and more efficient grid.

OATI webSmartEnergy provides the scalability, performance, and security needed to support higher penetrations of Smart Grid functionality, while fully integrating with field equipment, operations, and enterprise systems for end-to-end functionality. With a requirement to integrate operations, Seven States Power Corporation, Inc. (7SPC), a nonprofit corporation organized by the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA), turned to Oati’s webSmartEnergy suite. They needed to leverage the distribution expertise of their member Local Power Companies (LPCs) to bring Demand Response (DR) operations closer to end-consumers. As part of a proof-of-concept project that includes three cooperatives and two municipals, 7SPC successfully used OATI webSmartEnergy suite application OATI webDistribute to take control of their DR programs. OATI webDistribute helped 7SPC in managing DR operations at Commercial and Industrial companies; achieving economic and reliability value all year round; accurately shedding load, and curtailing demand.

Moving forward, OATI aspires to deliver full technology solutions to system operators in the value chain, individually and through partnerships, to address concerns with technology system integration and long term post installation support. “We, at OATI, look forward to develop standards in participation with industry and government stakeholders to ensure interoperability of system components and reduce risk of technology obsolescence,” concludes Mokhtari.
