AWS and Pattern Energy Jointly Undertakes Renewable Energy Project for Datacenters
SEATTLE, WA: Computing services provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces partnership with Pattern Energy Group to power their data centers with wind energy. Pattern Energy Group is a renewable energy developer and together they will construct and operate 150 megawatt (MW) wind energy source, the Amazon Web Services Wind Farm (Fowler Ridge).
The project will commence from January 2016, annually generating nearly 500,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of wind power for AWS Cloud datacenters. Through this project and a 13 year power purchase agreement (PPA), AWS is getting closer to achieving their commitment of 100 percent renewable energy usage.

“This PPA helps to increase the renewable energy used to power our infrastructure in the U.S. and is one of many sustainability activities and renewable energy projects for powering our datacenters that we currently have in the works.” says Jerry Hunter, Vice President of Infrastructure, Amazon Web Services.
He also says that the Amazon Web Services Wind Farm (Fowler Ridge) will bring a new source of clean energy to the electric grid, where they are currently operating a large number of datacenters. They also have ongoing expansion plans to accommodate their growing customer base.
